What are canids? 

 

Canids are mammals that belong to the dog family. Members include: 

 

  • Wolves – the largest members of the family. They weigh 70-100 pounds and can be found in North America, Europe, and Africa. 

  • Foxes – the smallest members of the family. They weigh 12-15 pounds and can be found on all continents. 

  • Dogs – which can be found in homes everywhere throughout the world. There are an estimated 700 million dogs worldwide. 

  • Jackals – they weigh 7-22 pounds and live in Southeastern Europe, Asia, and Africa. 

  • Coyotes – these canids weigh 20-50 pounds and can be found in North and Central America.
