They can:

So the better question becomes: if the body slows down, what happens to the brain?

Hibernation Is Not an Off Switch

The bear survives by changing the math.

  • Stored fat becomes the main fuel.

  • Metabolism slows so energy lasts longer.

  • Movement is reduced to save calories.

Torpor: The Bear Version of Low Power Mode

Small hibernators, like some ground squirrels, can drop their body temperature dramatically. Bears are different.

They lower metabolism and heart rate, but their body temperature usually stays much higher than that of tiny deep hibernators. That matters because a large bear cannot cool down and warm up as quickly as a small animal.
