This kit puts a real barn owl pellet in your hands and lets the science happen from there. Inside is a compact biological record of a wild owl's last meal, compressed bones and fur, waiting to be taken apart one careful piece at a time. Using the included pick and forceps, you'll excavate actual skulls, jawbones, vertebrae, and limb bones from small mammals. Each fragment is real data from a real animal. Ecology, anatomy, and predator-prey relationships, all in one foil-wrapped package.
Everything you need is in the box: the heat-sterilized pellet, an illustrated guide explaining what owl pellets are and how they form, precision excavation tools, and a resealable storage pouch for your findings. No extra supplies, no guesswork, no setup. Just open it and start digging.
Worksheets don't teach science. A real skull at the end of a forceps does. This kit skips the simulations and puts an authentic barn owl pellet in your hands, with everything needed to excavate it, identify what's inside, and understand why it matters.
Designed for Real Learning
Students excavate real skeletal remains and sort bones by type and size, practicing the same observation and classification skills used in professional biology.
Instead of memorizing predator-prey relationships from a chart, learners reconstruct them. The bones inside are evidence of a real food web, not an illustration of one.
Skulls, ribs, vertebrae, and limb bones give students hands-on exposure to real skeletal structures. They can compare what they find to bone identification charts and reference guides.
Supports asking questions, analyzing data, and constructing explanations from evidence. Reinforces ecosystem and life science standards across middle and high school curricula.

The Science Behind It
Barn owls swallow prey whole. What they can't digest gets compressed inside the gizzard and regurgitated as a tightly packed pellet. That pellet is a complete record of the owl's last meal.
The owl hunts at night and swallows small mammals whole, fur, bones, and all.
The gizzard goes to work, separating soft tissue from indigestible material and compressing it into a dense pellet.
The pellet is regurgitated, creating a compact biological record of exactly what the owl ate.
You excavate the evidence, recovering skulls, jawbones, vertebrae, and limb bones. Real data from a real animal.
Who It's For
A complete, independent science lesson that needs no prep, no lab, and no extra materials. Just open and explore.
Reinforces NGSS practices in a single hands-on session. Works great as a standalone enrichment activity or a lab supplement.
After-school programs, nature camps, and enrichment centers get a ready-to-run activity with real scientific substance behind it.
Not just for students. If you're genuinely interested in nature and don't mind a little fur, this one is for you.
Everything you need to know about our barn owl pellets.
Yes. All of our barn owl pellets are heat sterilized to 250°F, killing bacteria and parasites. They are safe for use in classrooms from elementary school through college.
Economy / Small (1.0"–1.49") — great for young learners and tight budgets.
Standard / Medium (1.5"–2.0") — our most popular, typically 1–3 prey.
Premium / Jumbo (2.0"+) — packed with prey, ideal for sharing between two students.
Most teachers order one pellet per student. Premium / Jumbo pellets can be shared between two students since they often contain multiple prey animals.
We ship Monday–Friday. Domestic orders ship within 5–7 business days (standard) or 2–3 business days (express/priority). Express orders placed before 2 PM PST ship same day.

Barn owls swallow prey whole and regurgitate compressed pellets of bones, fur, and feathers. You'll typically find the skeletal remains of small mammals (voles, shrews, mice) and occasionally small birds.
