Visiting an Orchard? Look for Nest Boxes!

by OBDK on September 29, 2021

Now that fall is officially here, many of you will be embracing staple activities of the season, like visiting an orchard for apple picking, pumpkin picking, and hayrides. When you visit an orchard or farm this season, take some time to chat about barn owls.

After all, barn owls are helpers to farmers that want to keep their crops safe from rodents that can ruin everything if they have the run of the area. While some may think pesticides are the best option, barn owls are a much more effective and natural way to handle the problem.

More and more orchards are using nest boxes on their properties to help barn owls get settled and hunt the night away. This keeps those crops healthy and safe from rodents so that you can come in and pick them. So when you visit, be on the lookout for nest boxes!

And when the apple pie is baking in the oven, keep the conversation going by dissecting a barn owl pellet! It’s the perfect way to connect the information about owls and their prey with the activity of the day.
