Last week, a customer asked me a simple question: How long will owl pellets last?

He had a good reason for asking. He still had OBDK pellets he purchased 11 years ago. And I realized I couldn’t give him a very good answer. We had never actually tested a pellet anywhere near this old. The longest we had intentionally kept one was about a year.

Apparently, our commitment to long-term scientific research has limits.

An Accidental 11-Year Experiment

Enter Carl Nash of Downers Grove, Illinois, an avid birding enthusiast and longtime educator.

Carl had held onto his OBDK owl pellets for more than a decade. It turns out he had been conducting our long-term study for us. He just neglected to tell us.

Carl dissected one of his 11-year-old pellets and found that while it was considerably drier and harder than a fresh pellet, it was still intact, and the bones were remarkably well preserved.

The results speak for themselves. Even after 11 years, Carl recovered delicate bones and an impressively intact skull.

That is an awfully good showing for something an owl coughed up during the Obama administration.

So, How Long Do Owl Pellets Last?

We now have firsthand evidence that OBDK owl pellets can remain usable for at least 11 years.

That doesn’t mean an 11-year-old pellet will dissect exactly like a fresh one, but Carl’s accidental experiment gives us a much better answer than we had a week ago.

Storing Owl Pellets

For long-term storage, think sealed, cool, and dry:

  • Keep them sealed in their original resealable bag or another sealed container.
  • Keep them cool in a reasonably temperature-controlled location.
  • Keep them dry, protected from moisture, humidity, and excessive heat.

Dissecting an Older Pellet

If an older pellet has become unusually dry and hard:

  • Add water shortly before dissection.
  • Allow it to soften until the fur begins to separate more easily.
  • Dissect gently while damp, working carefully around delicate bones you may not yet be able to see.

As Carl discovered, it’s a little messier—but remarkably effective.

Why Sterilization Matters

One of the primary reasons we heat-treat our pellets is to end the food chain.

Owl pellets are natural material, and there are tiny critters whose idea of a well-stocked pantry is an owl pellet. Left untreated, some insect larvae are perfectly happy to feast on one as they make their way to adulthood.

Scientists may find that fascinating.

Parents of young schoolchildren? We’ve found they tend to be considerably less enthusiastic when the science project develops a life of its own.

Our sterilization process interrupts that cycle before the pellet reaches your classroom. We want the only creatures you discover in an OBDK pellet to be the ones the owl ate—not the ones that moved in afterward.
