What Is Biotic Potential?

What is biotic potential?

Biotic potential is the number of offspring a mother may produce, given the environmental conditions in which she resides.

For many animals, how many babies the female produces will directly depend on how many resources, like food, are available. These are the environmental factors that determine biotic potential. When it comes to food availability, the biotic potential of apex predators is very dependent on this. It ensures that the current generation doesn’t eat all of the available food and cause a collapse of the upcoming generations or their own prey populations.
