In 1996, a good friend and I began exploring ideas about how to live with more impact and spend more time with our families. The motivation was simple, and the question was asked: “What can we create that enriches people’s lives, helps meet our families’ financial needs, creates an opportunity for others, and look back on our lives with joy?”
Well, those weren’t the exact words, looking back, but that’s what the result of a small partnership between fellow entrepreneur and friend Marc Trueb and me became.
In those early days it was called Owl Brand Kits, a retail outlet for my emerging wholesale owl pellet supply company, Owl Brand Supply Company, Inc (OBSC), formerly QuadradixNW. Marc opted to be an owl pellet collector and since that point has provided hundreds of thousands of pellets!
Owl Brand Kits inserted “Discovery” into the name in 2000 and how appropriate that has been. Having served thousands of educators from homeschool to scout to public schools, Owl Brand Discovery Kits (OBDK) has become a recognized source of quality, fun, and affordable science projects. In 2005, OBDK enjoyed recognition from National Geographic Canada as a top resource for educators. And our ongoing revisions of our popular Barn Owl Discovery Guide has received more than 90,000 downloads!
In 2012, we were chosen from thousands of companies across the United States as a “Good Company” by Multi-View Media and profiled in our very own webisode through their large company.
What is truly remarkable is the results of OBDK’s success. More than 100 families have benefited from selling their ‘product’ to the company, and since our inception, the Owl Brand Supply Company has sold over 8 million barn owl pellets! And yes, they are individually processed!
OBSC has also been able to participate in outreaches throughout the world that were just beyond our imagination, including development projects in Mexico through our own project called Mission Oaxaca and today enjoys upholding work around the world, including our unfolding work in Afghanistan classrooms. We also take a portion of our profits to develop Kidwings.com, which includes a grant called Finding Funding, a partnership with other education companies that benefits at least one teacher in North America each month.
In the end, however, there is one outcome that transcends all others in the success of the Owl Brand. The company’s ethos includes being a reflection of Jesus Christ’s light through the sales of a product that helps us reach educators, students, suppliers, and everyone in between. We aspire to showcase God’s remarkable creation through the fun, engaging, and ethical study of Barn Owls and their prey. Owl Brand’s goal is to bring light into people’s lives, whether it is through our Finding Funding grant, providing earning opportunities, or the quality and friendly delivery of exceptional service and products.
